Centennial Regatta
Five short of a 100 boats celebrate EGYC’s Centennial Regatta
Under Saturday’s July 18th superb sailing conditions marking 100 years history, 73 sailboats raced in 3 classes while 5 powerboats participated in its inaugural predicted log competition. It was followed on Sunday July 19th with a One Design Laser Regatta. Entries represented participation of 11 separate yacht clubs from Narragansett Bay. It was a day where wind conditions suited the heavier cruising boats’ handicaps. Big winners in the 33 boat racing class was Rabbit, a Black Watch 37 skippered by Dan Dyer, Skip Hawkins’ Caneel, a Pearson 10M in the Non Spinnaker Class from Wickford Yacht Club and Barrington Yacht Club respectively, while East Greenwich Yacht Club’s Dean Fachon skippering Sophon-OPUS, a 35C, won the Family Cruising Class. In the One Design 17 boat Laser Class, All Pro Moose McClintock took first place honors. Counterpart for the juniors was Ryan Whelan. Bob Mazzeo, with the best actual time performance, was the predicted log winner.
EGYC Centennial Regatta Team, consisting of On-The-Water Team Tom D’Albora, Tracy Boyajian and Bill Pearson put on an event 2nd to none. A deck party organized by social chair Barb Beckwith had 450 guests who were feted, fed and entertained on EGYC’s fine deck and house facilities. Trustee and Race Committee Chair Vin McAteer was Master of Ceremonies. It was no ordinary trophy presentation but entertainment par excellence only to be eclipsed by superb trophies, compliments of the creative craft of Trustee Jason Dittleman, depicting historic EGYC framed pictures. Some of the best of the centennial day was held until the early evening when slide shows were presented in the member lounge and bar. A team of (4) photographers, BJ Porter, Jeff Stevens, Bob Sloan and Ruth Clegg compiled pictures which were choreographed by Ruth Clegg into action held slide shows.
It was a party befitting a 100 years of EGYC history.
